As my ability write flowery prose improves, I’m receiving more feedback that I might want to dial it back a notch. As I read the stories that they are commenting on, I can’t help but agree. Especially when I’m writing fantasy stories or science fiction, where the subject matter itself is already kinda ostentatious.
Trying to do too much fancy writing can make a story difficult to read–particularly a longer work.
One recent reviewer put it best, I think.
“Good writing, like good breeding, should not draw attention to itself.”
